Last
Minute Words of Encouragement Beth Sundberg, ALT Hanamaki City, 1994-96
We hope that this handbook has been useful in helping you to prepare for the adventure that awaits you here in Iwate. In closing, we would like to offer you some last minute suggestions. First, we cannot stress enough the importance of looking over your CLAIR materials. Right now you may be feeling "information overload" with all the materials that you have received, but you will find valuable information in those handbooks. Most of your major questions can be answered from these resources. Also, please do not hesitate to contact any of us over here in Japan. We are more than happy to help! Secondly, if you do not speak Japanese (like many of us before we came), please try to learn the basics before you come. As you will soon discover, Japan is the land of politeness and a few essential phrases will endear you to many! At the least, try to learn greetings, numbers, and if you are feeling really ambitious, you could tackle hiragana and katakana (the "alphabets"). Before I came to Japan, I met with a Japanese tutor once a week. The little bit that I picked up from these weekly sessions proved to be invaluable. Finally, RELAX!! I cannot emphasize this enough. When I was preparing to come to Japan, I was a nervous wreck. I was so worried about buying the appropriate omiyage and whether or not my skirts were too short that I forgot to enjoy my last month at home. Savor the last few weeks with your family and friends. Go to the movies, eat your favorite foods, and most importantly, don't worry! You are about to embark on a great adventure, filled with many experiences and curiosities. Living in Iwate is an opportunity that few foreigners have the chance to experience, so consider yourself lucky! Happy packing and we are looking forward to seeing you in August! |
