E-Marketplace Case Study
"My E-Marketplace" Welcome Page Wireframe Notes
Spring 2001

Background

  • Tool: Visio 2000
  • Input: Functional Specifications Document; My E-Marketplace Home Page Wireframe
  • Primary Author: Anthony Hand

Usually, no matter how good the wireframe, there are various things about the wireframe that need to be explained in detail so our project teammates can properly execute the creative or technical aspects. Recently, I've been involved in trying to standardize on a single approach within my company to the kinds of notes that should written to explain the purpose and interaction requirements of wireframes and link them back to the relevant use cases.

As a result, I had a good framework to begin with. All of the wireframe notes pages followed the same approach outlined below. Where there was no content for a given heading, we just left it blank. These notes were always on the following page within a Visio document after the page they described. Sometimes I supplemented these notes with little call outs for particularly important points within the body of the wireframe itself.

I was gratified to see the development team rely on these notes pages pretty heavily. It's always nice to know that the documentation you put so much sweat and tears into is actually being used by your colleagues! :-)

Wireframe Notes for My E-Marketplace Welcome Page

Functionality

  • Only users whose organizations have been assigned privileges for viewing business opportunity postings, alone or in combination with other privilege sets, are given this page. Otherwise, users are given the alternate 1.0-Pub Welcome page.
  • After logging into the secure E-Marketplace system, a user from a member organization can view customized and personalized information.
  • The system provides customized lists of recently posted opportunities and organizational profiles in "eAgent".
  • The system provides primary access to the user's Portfolio through the My E-Marketplace home page. The user can print a summary of the entire contents of the Portfolio and access a Portfolio management area.

Rules

  • The page displays a welcome message and identifies the user by name.
  • eAgent rules:
    • The postings and organization profiles eAgent displays are controlled by the preferences set in each user's "My Profile".
    • Only those postings and organization profiles which have been posted within the previous 30 days are eligible for display in eAgent.
    • All postings and organization profiles presented by eAgent are sorted by posting date in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
    • Maximum 10 items are displayed in each section in eAgent.
  • Portfolio rules:
    • The Portfolio area displays a limited number of folders on the page (maximum 10). The user may access other sub-sets of the Portfolio (such as numbers 11-20 and 21-30) via a single click.
    • The Portfolio shows summary details about each item in a folder.
    • The Portfolio flags which Portfolio items have been updated or otherwise changed in the last 30 days.
    • Portfolio folders are displayed in a user-configurable order.
    • Items within Portfolio folders are sorted first by updated status (recently updated or not), then alphabetically.
