Crazy ATM Project--
#2: The Main Menu
Fall 1997

Our design philosophy for this project was based on several core points: personalized service, ease of use and learning, quickness and convenience, branding, and system flexibility for the bank. One can see how we incorporated these elements from the very first screen.

  • Personalized Service: The screen greets the customer with their preferred name. Here, the user will see their own name "Chris" over, say, "Ms. Jones." The one-button withdrawal, Crazy QuickCash, is set when the customer opens her account. Chris' is currently set at $40 from Checking but the system can track her actions and change the default if necessary. For example, if she starts to withdraw $100 from Savings every time, her Crazy QuickCash button can change to reflect that over time for her convenience. Also, English is Chris' default language, though she could change it in the bottom left corner.
  • Ease of Use and Learning: We use color, grouping, and common sense language to help even the most infrequent ATM user feel confident and comfortable using the Crazy ATM.
  • Quickness and Convenience: All transactions are no more than one touch away, and touching Crazy QuickCash gives the customer instant cash.
  • Branding: The bank's distinctive logo appears on every screen in the same screen location. In addition, the convenient one-button withdraw feature, named Crazy QuickCash, is a potent branding tool and value-added service to the customer.
  • System Flexibility: Unlike current ATMs, this interface design is completely independent of buttons with parallax problems, number pads with the paint wearing off the keys, or other unreliable hard-wired inputs. This allows for total customization of the interface by the bank. The bank can change the color scheme, display font, add new functionality or transaction types, allow customer-oriented customization of the Main Menu based on their active accounts, and so on. This inherent flexibility leads to better responsiveness to customer and competitive demands, lower maintainance costs, and greater overall customer satisfaction.
