Crazy ATM Project--
#1: The Welcome Screen
Fall 1997

This whole Automatic Teller Machine project was a lot of fun. The other two who made up the Crazy ATM team were Alex Sergay (U-M staff) and Yu-chin Chang (education Master's student).

The assigment was simple: design a potentially workable ATM interface. In addition, the professor wanted us to consider how we could improve on the usability of current ATMs and incorporate the product's brand name throughout the design. Our team took the approach on the project that we were a design company contracted to develop a new ATM interface for a pre-existing bank called Crazy Bank.

You can see on the Weclome screen how we start the product branding immediately: the distinctive letterforms and colors of the Crazy ATM logo, a trade-marked hand scanning technology to use in place of ATM cards, and the hand form for the "a" in "Hand-Scan".

We envisioned that this Welcome screen would be a screen saver showing on the monitor until a customer approached the machine. Then the computer would show the authentication screen prompting the customer to put his or her hand on the scanning plate (or to instert their ATM card if they were from a different bank).
